Optimizing for Bing
Microsoft’s introduction of its new search engine, Bing, is proving to be a challenge for search engine optimization experts because it is changing the established ways of optimizing a web site.
Bing is proving to be a new challenge for online marketers who are applying the familiar SEO methods to achieve the goal of getting a higher ranking in search engine result pages.
Although Google is still the acknowledged king of search engines, Bing is proving to be a rising star and may prove to be a strong competitor against Google. This early, online marketers and SEO experts are already compiling new methodologies that will be effective for their SEO campaigns. Below are some of the strategies that may prove effective for Bing:
- Bing actually includes the age of a domain into consideration in its page ranking. This is going to prove to be a challenge for those who have new web sites or new domains. A solution will be to get an older domain in order to get a higher ranking. You can do this by buying older domains that no one owns.
- Titles are important for Bing. One way to make sure you get top searches in Bing is to use the most effective keywords and using it in making the title tags. Don’t forget to make the necessary connections between the title and the description.
- Unlike in Google, Bing will accept outbound links. Build as many outbound links as you can while Bing still accepts it.
- Backlinks to your web site are not as effective in ensuring a higher page ranking in search engine results if you’ll base it on the rules of other search engines. But in Bing, the more backlinks to your site, the better your page ranking will be. Bing counts all of the backlinks that come from sites relevant to your web site and the volume will ensure a better page ranking.
- Google doesn’t measure the amount of text but Bing does. So when you’re trying to optimize your web site for Bing, always consider the amount of text that is uploaded on your web site. Adding more text to your site will ensure that Bing will notice your site more.
- Make sure to prepare a good sitemap because it will also contribute to a better page ranking for your web site in Bing.
- Make sure that your URL is simple and also fixed. It will be hard to index a complex URL as a link destination. URLs that frequently change are also hard to index and has the added disadvantage of being hard for people to think of or remember. That’s why static URLs “perform” better with Bing.
- Bing uses MSNBot in crawling through web sites. If MSNBot is prohibited in a web site it will fail to index it, and it won’t appear in Bing. So make sure that MSNBot is not in your list of forbidden web crawlers. Also include the use of a robots.txt file or tag in order to better manage MSNBot and other web crawlers.
